Will RISC-V architecture processor will replace x86/ARM CPU in future?

With the fall of MIPS, RISC-V has quietly become the world’s third largest processor architecture, eyeing x86 and ARM.

When communicating with TheReg recently, Ms. Calista Redmond, CEO of RISC-V Management Organization, did not hide her ambitions, she expressed her hope that this emerging open source architecture technology can rule the world.

Will RISC-V architecture processor will replace x86/ARM CPU in future?

As for how to do this, Redmond proposed to win the support of paying members of the association, so as to have enough funds to support the continuous evolution of this free and open source architecture, so as to better compete with ARM and x86.

RISC-V International already has more than 20 premium members, and the membership fee is $250,000. An interesting name for this is Intel, the current king of x86 processors.

In addition, there are well-known names such as Alibaba Cloud, Google, Huawei, Ziguang Zhanrui, and ZTE.

However, participating in the conference does not mean that Intel also has the idea to use RISC-V to end its own x86 CPU.

Redmond’s view is that Intel is vigorously developing its own wafer business, and it is clear that it can OEM x86 for other companies.

ARM, RISC-V and other chips. Obviously, from this point of view, Intel has more penetration of RISC-V, which is not harmful at all.

According to Redmond’s expectations, she believes that RISC-V can achieve ARM’s 20 years of achievements in the next five years.

Although it seems to be a tone to replace competing products, Ms. Redmond emphasized that x86/ARM will not be outdated, and future IT practitioners will use three sets of architectures to allow them to find the best position in different scenarios.

In addition, Ms. Redmond also revealed that RISC-V-based server and PC products will be announced before the end of the year.
