USB3.0/USB4 is officially cancelled and will adopt a new naming method

USB3.0/USB4 is officially cancelled and will adopt a new naming method.

On October 1st, according to media reports, the USB-IF agency made two major decisions.

The first was to officially delete the commercial naming methods of USB3.X and USB4, and the second was to cancel the SuperSpeed USB brand.

In the era of USB 3.0, the naming of the USB interface gradually began to be confused, which was criticized by many users. In the USB4 era, this phenomenon has not changed.

USB3.0/USB4 is officially cancelled and will adopt a new naming method

According to USB-IF, the naming of USB3.X and USB will be named after the new “USB+ transfer speed”, namely USB 5Gbps, USB 10Gbps, USB 20Gbps and USB 40Gbps. USB4 V2.0 is still in the draft stage.

If nothing else, its final name will be USB 80Gbps.

In addition, USB-IF also stated that since the transmission speed of USB2.0 is only 480Mbps, the new naming method will be quite misleading, so the naming of USB2.0 and USB1.0 is still reserved.

However, industry insiders said that the USB-IF’s move will likely not constrain the industry.

Because USB is not a mandatory standard, as an open standard, if the manufacturer is unwilling to change and continues to use the names such as USB3.X/3.2GenX/USB4 or USB4 v2.0, it is still possible, which will inevitably lead to greater confusion in USB naming. .
