Ubuntu 22.04 has been released, and we’ll start seeing updates for all subsequent Linux distributions based on Canonical’s operating system.

For example, the first release candidate for Linux Lite 6.0, based on Ubuntu 22.04, is now available, and Linux Lite is very popular among those switching from Microsoft Windows to Linux.

The notable feature of Linux Lite 6.0 RC1 is the ditching of Mozilla Firefox as the default web browser in favor of Goole Chrome 100.

The operating system currently uses Linux kernel 5.15.0-25 and desktop environment Xfce 4.16.3.

It comes pre-installed with some great software like GIMP 2.10.30, Thunderbird 91.7.0, VLC 3.0.16 and Libre Office 7.2.6.2.

“The theme of this series is inclusive and fresh. The latest browsers, the latest office suites, the latest custom software. My goal has always been to provide a streamlined, full-featured operating system. In the 6x series, this will be our Continuing focus. New in this release is assistive technology.

Comes in the form of screen readers, desktop magnifiers, and virtual keyboards. All tools to ensure our hearing and sight impaired communities are never left behind. A new theme, a new system monitor and manager completes the major new features,” said Jerry Bezencon, lead developer of Linux Lite.

Bezencon added: “Now that Firefox is a Snap package for Ubuntu, and users need to be able to handle as few package managers as possible, Chrome is the obvious alternative in this case. Huge market share, familiar Windows system , pretty much anything you throw at it will work, all of which are backed by a little company called Google. We also include a built-in virus scan engine (disabled by default) provided by Virus Total. Now, Chrome also You’ll be asked if you want files to be scanned before opening them. To enable this, simply turn it on under Chrome Extensions”.

The developers share known issues below:

  • There is no prompt to eject media at the end of a traditional install, there is a prompt at the end of a UEFI install.
  • Release Notes – doesn’t work on the first installer slide.
  • Desktop Icons – English only.
  • Dropbox: If you get an error, you need to run the setup twice.
  • Due to an unsolvable issue, there is no Grub editing feature in this series of Linux Lite Tweaks. If you are dual-booting or multi-booting, the word Ubuntu will appear in the Grub menu. If you feel uncomfortable looking at it, you can try the Grub customizer.

The Grub menu shows Linux Lite as “Ubuntu”.

If you’re ready to try Linux Lite 6.0 RC1, you can download it right now here. Keep in mind that this is only a release candidate — there may be some bugs. In other words, it should not be done in a production environment.

The final release is scheduled for June 1, 2022; if you plan to use it on your main computer, it’s wise to wait for the stable release.
