On August 30th, in conjunction with the release of Huawei’s flagship phone, the Mate 60 Pro, China Telecom introduced a new “Satellite Direct to Mobile” plan. Users with phones that support the TianTong satellite function can subscribe to this service.

The plan includes a service fee of 10 yuan per month (approximately US$1.38/month), which covers:

  • Domestic (including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) calls at 10 yuan per minute (about US$1.38/minute).
  • International long-distance calls at 20 yuan per minute (about US$2.78/minute).
  • International satellite calls (including maritime, Iridium, and Eurostar, among others) at 50 yuan per minute (about US$26.89/minute).
  • Domestic incoming calls at 10 yuan per minute (about US$1.38/minute).
  • Sending SMS at 5 yuan per message (about US$0.69/message), but international messaging is not supported, and incoming messages are free.

The most economical package costs 1,000 yuan per year (about US$137/year) and includes 750 minutes of domestic calls and 5 domestic SMS messages.

This results in a per-minute rate of only 1.3 yuan (about US$0.18/minute).
