Chrome is still the fastest browser on the Mac: Another 20% improvement in benchmarks

In March of this year, some media reported that Google had significantly optimized Chrome 99’s performance, giving it a 300-point Speedometer benchmark, outperforming all browsers on macOS, including Apple’s own Safari

Recently, the Chrome team has continued to work hard to give the Chrome browser another speed boost on macOS.

Chrome is still the fastest browser on the Mac: Another 20% improvement in benchmarks

Chrome’s official social media said in a tweet :

Three months ago, we achieved the highest score on Apple’s Speedometer benchmark – and today Chrome is 20% faster on the Mac, scoring over 360 points.

It should be emphasized that the benchmark tool selected for this test is Speedometer (version 2.0), which is the same as three months ago.

It is a testing tool developed by Apple’s WebKit team. the responsiveness of the device.

For reference, the device used this time is a MacBook Pro equipped with an M1 Max chip, the system version is macOS 12.3.1, the Chrome version used is 104.0.5102.0, and the browser is the native ARM64 version.

The graph below shows the difference in ratings between the old and new Chrome versions, with higher scores being better.

As you can see in the picture (red curve), Google still attributes the performance improvement to the ThinLTO build optimization technology, V8 Sparkplug compiler and Short builtins calls used in Chrome.

  • By enabling ThinLTO, critical parts of the codebase can be inlined (even across multiple files or libraries);
  • Combined with graphics optimizations (pass-through decoder and out-of-process rasterization);
  • The V8 Sparkplug compiler can compile the generated code Overhead is reduced;
  • Short builtins calls can avoid indirect jumps when calling functions, thereby improving performance.

As a result, the Chrome browser is now 70% faster on M1-based Macs than when it was first released on those machines in late 2020.

Of course, Google isn’t putting Android users on the sidelines, and the Chrome for Android browser is also 15% faster, thanks to improved navigation techniques in the browser UI thread.

Chrome has always been a fast browser, but speed is not everything.

Chrome’s memory usage and power consumption on laptops have been criticized by people.

When can it be changed?
