Android 14 exposed: Codenamed Upside Down Cake.

As the first beta version of Android 13 is about to be released, development work on Android 14 is already in progress.

According to  XDA-Developers , some Android 14 -related first commits have appeared on Android Gerrit , which mentions that the version is code-named “Upside Down Cake”.

A flip cake is a relatively niche type of cake that refers to a cake that is baked upside down in a pan. Toppings (usually sliced fruit like apples or pineapples) are placed in the bottom of the pan, then the batter is poured over the toppings and baked in the oven.

After roasting from the oven, turn it upside down, so that the fruit pieces and other materials originally at the bottom are turned over to the top.

Google has long had a tradition of naming Android versions with dessert names, following the pattern of initials iterating in alphabetical order.

But with the launch of Android 10, the company decided to do away with that tradition, rebranding Android versions as mere numbers.

However, these dessert codes are still used internally: for example , Android 12 is Snow Cone (shaved ice), Android 13 is Tiramisu (tiramisu), and Android 14 seems to be Upside Down Cake.

Dessert names (internal or public) for all Android versions to date:

  • Android 1.5: Cupcake
  • Android 1.6: Donut
  • Android 2.0: Lightning
  • Android 2.2: Froyo
  • Android 2.3: Gingerbread
  • Android 3.0: Honeycomb
  • Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Android 4.1: Jelly Bean
  • Android 4.4: KitKat
  • Android 5.0: Lollipop
  • Android 6.0: Marshmallow
  • Android 7.0: Nougat
  • Android 8.0: Oreo
  • Android 9: Pie
  • Android 10: Quince Tart
  • Android 11: Red Velvet Cake
  • Android 12: Snow Cone
  • Android 12L: Snow Cone v2
  • Android 13: Tiramisu
  • Android 14: Upside Down Cake

It’s unclear what the connection between this cute codename and the Android 14 system build itself is. It is said that Android 14 will continue to improve support for multitasking, eSIM technology, etc.; the system will be smoother and more stable, and the direction seems to be consistent with Android 13.
